Go out and explore the Bras d'Or on your own terms. Download the inaturalist app and participate in a community of citizen scientists by sharing photos of flora and fauna you come accross. You don't need to be a professional ecologist of biologist to contribute to the scientific kowledge the the Bras d'Or Lakes Biosphere.

Biodiversity Scavenger Hunt

July 24 - August 8

Pick up your biodiversity scavenger hunt at local businesses around the Bras d'Or. Go Out, explore, and learn. Submit your scavenger hunt to ACAP to share your discoveries as a citizen scientist and win prizes. This Covid19 conscious activity is self directed and can be done alone or with those in your bubble.

Eagles Soar along the Bras d'Or Photography Contest
Email your photos of these majestic birds for a chance to win! Everyone is welcome to participate.
Category 1: Photos of eagles by photographers under 16 years old featuring eagles over or along the Bras d'Or. Prize draw.
Category 2: Open category for all. Most creative photo of a bald eagle taken from the Whycocomagh Waterfront Centre property.
Category 3: Open category for all. Best technical photo shot of a Bald Eagle anywhere within the Bras d'Or Lake landscape.
Photos must be taken between July 27th to August 8th and emailed to whycocomagh.waterfront.centre@gmail.com
please add the date, time, location and category of your photo.

Eskasoni community clean up

Shoreline Clean Up + BBQ at Ben Eoin

5:30 pm- 8:30 pm

Join the Ben Eoin community on the shores of the Bras d'Or Lake at the Beautiful Ben Eoin Marina for a shoreline cleanup of the public access Trans Canada Trail water trail access point. The Ocean Tracking Network will be on sight sharing underwater videos of the east bay waters. Moving forward the public access areas addressed by this community shoreline cleanup will be added to the regular maintenance schedule voluntarily by the Ben Eoin Yacht Club and Marina.

Travel through time at Highland Village Iona

Travel through time with the Free entrance into the Historic Highland Village in Beautiful Iona. Though no official events are scheduled, costumed staff will be present to showcase the local history of the Geals of Cape Breton. Open 10am-4:30pm Wednesday through Holiday Monday.

St. Anne’s Mission

St Anne’s Mission will be from July 28th to August 2nd, 2021.

The Mi’kmaq have celebrated the annual feast of Saint Anne in Potlotek First Nation, Nova
Scotia, on a tiny island called Miniku since 1742.
• Saint Anne’s Mission has been recognized as a National Historic Site of Canada since 2002.
• The Mi’kmaq recognize Saint Anne as their Patron Saint since 1629.
• The Saint Anne's Mission is also a traditional meeting place for the Mi’kmaw Grand Council
(Sante Mawiomi) – They come together and discuss issues affecting the Mi’kmaw Nation. The
Grand Council (represents the 7 districts) and gives a yearly address on Sunday during the Saint
Anne Mission

Grand Council and the Council for Potlotek First Nation are requesting that this year ‘s mission
attendees follow all necessary COVID-19 protocol regulations set out by the province. Phase 4 is
set to begin on July 14th.

The regulations for any kind of gathering, social or faith, will be set at 50% of the venue’s
capacity of 200. Thus, 100 people can attend mass while properly social distancing. The
gathering limit outside the venue is 250 individuals. Masks are mandatory at the indoor mass.

Old big Harbour Trail Walk

12:00 pm- 4:00 pm

Enjoy a trail walk along the decommissioned Old Big Harbour road highlighting this karst ecosystem recently protected by the Nova Scotia Nature trust. From Hwy 105 turn towards Big Harbour. The turn off is signed "Big Harbour Road" and on Google maps it is listed as "New Harris Rd". Drive down until you get to Partrige Landing and the beginning of the Old Big Harbour trail.

In person registration will be required prior to beginning. Please maintain social distance while hiking and bring a mask for any instances where social distancing may not be possible. Bringing a snack and water is also recommended.

More then a Sunday Drive! Tour around Boularderie Island ,stopping along the road where you can meet local producers and artisans; pick up the best strawberries, blueberries and bagels around! You can even bring your bike and leave the car at the Ross Ferry Marine park for a cycle and shop experience.

Iona Hike

10:00 am- 1:00 pm

This semi guided walk and talk hike will feature local experts in natural history and traditional knowledge keepers sharing their wisdom in this Karst ecosystem. This is put on by the BLBRA trails committee because 2021 is the International year of Caves and Karst.

Meet at the MacCormack Provincial Park for registration at 10 am. Smooth roadway or forest walk options exits to access the experts sharing knowledge.

Lunch will be available at the Iona Heights Inn Pub for $13 from a preset menu.

Baddeck River Bike Ride

10:00 am- 2:00 pm

Enjoy the natural beauty and farmlands of the Baddeck River valley bottom by bicycle. This route goes from the town of Baddeck up the south side of the Baddeck River and back down the west side, a distance of approximately 23 km over good paved roads (no paved shoulders) and likely not a lot of traffic. It is suggested to bring a picnic lunch to eat on the way. Open to all cycling abilities. Please bring $2 for Velo Cape Breton Insurance if you are not yet a memeber.

Participants are to meet in the parking lot at the Baddeck Curling Club, behind the City Centre off Cameron Street (near the NSLC)at 10:00,
The route will proceed up the Old Margaree Road, then turn Right at a T-junction just over the TCH overpass (exit 9) onto Big Baddeck Rd, proceeding 11.4 km to the Uisge Ban road junction. The loop then continues another 11 km back to start.

After work adult community paddle + BBQ! Bring your canoe, kayak or SUP, or borrow a provided watercraft and safety gear. This event is designed for adults to feel like kids again and get on the water.

Everybody welcome community paddling event.

Bring your canoe, kayak, sup and join us on the water. This community paddle is open to everyone and ends at the Skye River Trail with cultural events.
Canoe rentals are possible. This is a great event opportunity also to take photos for the Eagle watch photo contest!

Shoreline Clean Up

10:00 am- 1:00 pm

Join the Crew from Eskasoni Fish and Wildlife for a community shoreline clean up. From Crane Cove there are some little windswept bays on islands that collect trash that will be targeted for this event.

Join the crew from the Eskasoni Fish and Wildlife Commission for a boat access shoreline clean up.

Volunteers will be boated to a nearby island bay that collects windblown trash. EFWC will provide the boat ride and drinking water. Volunteers are encouraged to dress for the conditions and may want to pack a lunch.

Kidston Island Evening Kayak Tour

Experience the splendor of Bras d'Or Lake by kayak. This once in a season opportunity includes all equipment and instruction for an evening experience around the picturesque Kidston island. Enjoy a swim at a secluded beach and homemade banana bread and strawberry rhubarb jam with Angelo himself. This tour is an Explore the Bras d'Or special not to be missed. Minuimum age is 16 years old to join. There are only 6 spots available so call North River Kayaks soon to secure your spot. All six spots must be reserved for this rare opportunity right from Baddeck to occur.

The Big Swim

This is an 8 km or 12 KM kayak supported Big Swim in support of Brigadoon Village. Pre-registration is a must and non-involved spectating will be discouraged due to covid 19 precautions.
